Ministers respond to People’s Assembly members’ queries on issues related to education and health 14/10/2014 Damascus, SANA – The People’s Assembly held a session on Tuesday during which the Ministers of Higher Education, Education, and Health answered queries posed by Assembly regarding the state of the education and health sectors in Syria. Assembly members called for establishing new fields of study in health education establishments, reconsidering the status of students who exhausted their chances to pass their exams, revising the student acceptance capacity policy, reconsidering parallel education fees, and establishing new state universities to cater to low-income students. They also called for adopting night school hours at universities to accommodate more students, and establishing field hospitals in Homs. Higher Education Minister Mohammad Amer al-Mardini said that a new mechanism for admittance into universities is being prepared, and that the Ministry always works to help students who exhausted their chances to pass exams, adding that it’s possible to adopt night school hours at universities once the conditions in the country permit that. He also said that the Ministry is considering opening new universities in several provinces as soon as the necessary infrastructure and staff are available. In turn, Education Minister Hazwan al-Waz asserted his Ministry’s commitment to ensuring that no mistakes are made in the basic education and highschool exams, discussing the Ministry’s efforts regarding gifted students schools. For his part, Health Minister Nizar Yazigi said that repairing hospitals and health centers in secured areas is underway as per the government’s reconstruction plans, and that the Ministry is working to provide new ambulances via the Iranian credit line, noting that the Ministry established hospitals and mobile clinics in terrorism-affected areas.
