Do others have increasingly disturbing -oh-my-god-Im-in-a-horror-movie-and-its-so-ordinary moments? I went into a Sports Authority today; the enormous chain sporting goods stores. I dont go into big retail stores much anymore - mostly because my combination of cheapness-lack of attraction to material goods-simple living keeps me away In the store I looked around at all the STUFF. So much stuff - mostly petroleum and/or noxious chemical based...and it all makes so much sense. It really does. We are essentially rational creatures (though not so much on more subtle and sophisticated levels!) and we have created our society - and, at this point, pretty much the entire world - upon the production and purchasing of goods and services. THAT is, in a sense, our non-negotiable God: Make as much as you can and sell as much as you can to earn as much as you can. Repeated millions and tens of millions of times and places throughout our world. Every minute of everyday. And....well....I write this not in judgment of this non-negotiable God humans have created, but more as a description. I walked into the Sports Authority today and...I might as well have walked onto a Stephen King movie set...in the 3rd Act! And the scariest part about it was the accepted and championed ordinary-ness of it all. The Devil does indeed succeed through the sleight-of-hand of being overlooked.
