Do you know anything about teaching coding to kids? Nicole has an unusual question, and its best answered by those who have taught coding to students. I didnt attempt to answer it myself because I havent experienced the benefits of teaching coding. Heres her question: I work in a title 1 district that is a victim of generational poverty. Our district wants to limit 6th and 7th grade reading classes to 20 weeks (10 for nonfiction book, 10 for fiction book that reflects social studies) and teach coding/typing for the other 10 weeks, leaving study skills for the last 10 weeks. My question is how do you feel about coding? Is this something that should be taught on the middle school level or should it be more of high school elective? I am not sure if this is a life skill students need to learn, and I am worried about replacing half of our creative reading program with this. Do you think coding is really that essential?
