Do you remember where you were on August 1, 1971? I do. I was stuck in a traffic jam in the family station wagon crossing The George Washington Bridge in New York. I was with my family on one of the last long-distance family car adventures that my parents patiently planned and endured. My parents were teachers with long summer vacations and we -my three siblings and Mom and Dad- would all pile into the station wagon each summer on the quest for adventure. I remember this date in particular because I was a 14 year old Bob Dylan fanatic (I am now a 56 year old Bob Dylan fanatic) and Bob was coming out of a long reclusive phase to play at George Harrison’s “Concert for Bangladesh” at Madison Square Garden at that very moment. To be so close and to be listening to excited radio reports of the big event and still be stuck in a green station wagon with a bunch of people who didn’t get it, has made me eternally sympathetic to teenage alienation! Life can be cruel when you’re 14! youtube/watch?v=9nzwPUS_Glo
