Doctors’ residency training programme not satisfactory – FG - TopicsExpress

Doctors’ residency training programme not satisfactory – FG The Federal Government on Tuesday said that the residency training programme for Doctors in federal hospitals in the past decade has not been satisfactory, and has failed to meet desired target because of incessant strike actions. The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, stated this in Abuja during a one-day intensive appraisal of the residency training programme in hospitals owned by the Federal Government across the country. Chukwu lamented that the events of the past few months have brought the issue of residency training into sharper focus for Nigerians for a variety of reasons. He said, “All the problems inherent in the current programmes over the years crystallized in the last few weeks into what is tantamount to a complete loss of empathy and concern for humanity and human life respectively by the professional group, which by both training and calling, sits atop the healthcare industry.” According to him, what was needed is to fashion out a residency programme that would tackle and solve the problems of the current system which, over the years, had derailed from its lofty initial ideals to a system which is drifting away from its set objectives. The Minister charged the appraisal committee of the residency training programme to look at issues dispassionately, adding that they could always amend some of the recommendations. He said, “What is important is that government is determined to make it better, focused, determined and ensuring that each graduand at the end of the day is competent, better and more focused to tackle the challenges in the health sector and provide leadership.” The Director of Hospital Services, Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. Patience Osinubi, in a working document prepared by her, observed that the residency programme has been faced with numerous challenges, including poor performance and unsatisfactory conduct of the resident doctors. She said other challenges militating against what she described as an otherwise seamless programme, include, inadequate funding of residency programme by the federal hospitals, non-commitment on the part of the trainers and residents on the other hand to the programme, intermittent loss of accreditation by training institutions and lack of adequate training institutions. ift.tt/1tqNDO1 ift.tt/1ls1hrf [[Boost your social presence with NAIRALIKES nairalikes ]] #nigeria x #nairalikes #vanguardng
