Documentary film Ivory Tower - The Cost of College shown at Sundance Documentary filmmaker Andrew Rossi says one of the key findings in the documentary is a switch among universities and colleges to a model where they are acting more like big businesses when they are supposed to be nonprofits with a mission to educate students. Student debt has now exceeded $1trillion and has tripled over the cost of inflation leading one to question where is the money going? It does not appear to be going to teaching staff as their salaries pale in comparison to the profits being reaped. Private colleges and universities are profiting the most. There is far less transparency for private colleges and than for public universities since public higher education is funded, in part, by tax dollars and more accountability is expected and demanded. There is a scramble now for colleges to collect student statistics on total starts, graduations per discipline, the total cost, and placement in the industry. There is more hand holding of students who are not attending classes. If college is supposed to prepare an individual for a real life job can you ever imagine someone getting a call from his or her employer, HI Bob. We missed you at work today. Everything ok? We can have your supervisor tell you what you need to do to catch up when you return. Let us know if you need any help with anything. Hope to see you back to work soon! Have a great day! The question is can students get the skills they need while expending fewer resources? The answer is yes but they need to shop around. youtube/watch?v=ofuhlR4LAgQ
