Dont forget National Night Out tonight! See yesterdays post for all the deets! As I am out of the area this week on a vision quest, I remembered a question that was asked a few weeks back by a follower of our page. She asked if cops had to buy their own uniforms and if the city pays for cleaning, etc. A good question! The City of Bangor does provide police officers with uniforms. Officers have a point system that allows them to select what they need the most. Each July we have to examine what we are issued and decide what we need the coming year. Uniform costs are huge as you can imagine. Of course when an officer is first hired, they are fully outfitted. We have a class A uniform and a class B uniform. Class A uniforms are worn for formal or official business such as a public event or special occasion. These uniforms have an actual issued badge and are worn with the dress hat. Class B uniforms are worn for day to day patrol and have a sewn on cloth badge and name tag. They are more casual and made of tougher and more resilient material. Officers are required to pay for cleaning and up keep. If something is damaged in the line of duty, the department keeps spare, used equipment in a storage area in order to replace these items. As you can imagine, it happens quite a bit. I am providing a couple of photos of the spare uniform and equipment room to add visual excitement to an otherwise mundane and boring post. Thanks for the questions and we will try to answer more of these as time goes on.
