Dooars road cave-in brings traffic to halt Siliguri, 22 August: Traffic came to a grinding halt since morning today after the approach road of a bridge to National Highway-31 caved in due to heavy rainfall near Oodlabari under the Malbazar sub-division in Jalpaiguri last night. The matter came to light after a lorry overturned as it was crossing the bridge this morning. There was no report of casualty, the local administration said. However, a major accident was averted when public carriers crossed the road safely before the lorry overturned. The entire Dooars region was cut off from Siliguri through this route immediately after the fault was detected. Malbazar sub-divisional officer Jyotirmoy Tanti rushed to the spot and contacted higher authorities for the road repair work. According to Mr Tanti, the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) has already started working to restore the damaged portion so that vehicles can ply normally from tomorrow. Sources said the bridge was over a waterway between the Leesh and Ghish rivers in the Dooars and that after heavy downpour and huge discharge of water through this channel the base of the approach road sunk last night. According to the SDO, light vehicles and buses are plying through Oodlabari, Gazoldoba and then Siliguri and back the same route. Movement of heavy vehicles has been suspended through this route until the restoration is complete. “NHAI officials have targeted to restore the damaged portion by this evening,” Mr Tanti said. Several passengers had to face problems after traffic was suspended through Sevoke, a busy and popular route to and from the Dooars even for tourists. sns
