Dora put in a full 47 minutes on the treadmill this morning, and - TopicsExpress

Dora put in a full 47 minutes on the treadmill this morning, and had two nice long potty breaks. Then she ate breakfast with the rest of the pack. All of the other dogs in the house are relatively calm. It is 71° in my house with all of the windows open. Yet she is panting in her crate. Why? She has separation anxiety. This video was taken by me, after my husband and son left our home this morning. Dora is wearing a bark collar which is a dog training tool used to inhibit nuisance barking. Interrupting her nuisance barking is a crucial component to calming her down in the long run. If she cant wig out, and heighten her anxiety she will soon choose to nap instead. Incidentally, when I first brought Bollywood into my home he had many of these same behaviors. Now, he is aware of our routine. He goes potty, he puts in his time on the treadmill, he eats, then he hangs out in place until I return him to his crate. He exits his crate when we head out on our pack walk, and/or when I need to use him as a distraction while working with another dog. Correcting his whining and barking in the crate, providing a calm structured routine, of exercise, then food, has lead him down the path of behaving as a calm family dog. He knows barking, whining, and having a meltdown will not bring him the attention he wants. He understands his job. Dora is learning all of these things. Dog training is a process. Its usually not pretty when a dog has been allowed to behave badly for sometimes their entire lives. Its great progress that she has made a choice to behave more calmly today. In the future, her owners will need to stick to not making eye contact with her when they walk into their home. Avoid talking to her when she is in her crate. Allow her to exit her crate with the okay command, not just letting her race out of her crate into their arms. Sticking to a routine of calmness, and exercise. Using her bark collar. Not lamenting having to leave Dora resting in her crate when they exit their home. Using place on a regular basis when she is outside of her crate. Keeping an anxious dog on command, with a lot of structure, will relax the dog. Anxious dogs are demonstrating their need for leadership and directions. Provide leadership and direction and your dog will be on the path toward becoming a calm family dog.
