Double winning weekend for the Steeldogs The Bradfield Brewery Sheffield Steeldogs racked up another double winning weekend with wins in Dumfries against the Solway Sharks on Saturday before returning to iceSheffield for a Sunday clash with the Swindon Wildcats. Despite the unfamiliar rink in Dumfries with its small neutral zone, the all British Steeldogs line-up were too strong for the Sharks. They led 2-1 after the first period with goals from Squires and Pattison. Brownley and Calvert extended the margin in the second session with 16 year old Cole Shudra collecting an assist. Craig Elliott completed the scoring in the final period with net minder Nicole Jackson coming on for the last five minutes and keeping the Sharks at bay to complete a 5-1 win for Sheffield. Coach Payette was very pleased with all of the young players who iced and singled out one “It was absolutely fantastic to see Ron Shudra’s son Cole, a member of our Steeldogs Academy, a Sheffield Junior, playing regular shifts at 16 years old. He got on the score sheet with an assist and this is what this competition is all about”. Sunday night’s game started slowly as both teams got over their weekend’s travels. At 7.52, Stevie Lyle in the Swindon net thought he had covered a shot and everyone stopped but the red light came on and Referee Miller gave the goal. Tom Squires was credited with the goal, assisted by Korhon and Hirst. The stealth goal knocked Swindon out of their stride and Craig Elliott back handed number two past Lyle 71 seconds later. Swindon took their time-out and looked to get a foot in the game. And they did, with Malasinski firing over Sedlars shoulder at 13.33 on a Nell pass. Sheffield had a great opportunity as Korhon sprang Legue on short-handed breakaway but #11 shot just wide of Lyles near post to leave it at 2-1 at the break. The cat and mouse game continued with both sides sticking to their games. Sedlar flashed the leather to deny Malasinski before Korhon took it down the ice at speed to find Hirst in the slot to put the Dogs 3-1 up. Lewis Bell nearly added a fourth as a shot from the point had Lyle in trouble after Payette had cleared some space on the ice. The game continued to be a cagey affair with neither side managing a further goal as the clock counted up to 40 minutes. Swindon started third period well and had a short 5 on 3 during which Nell and Malasinski both missed chances that seemed easier to score than miss. The visitors kept the pressure up and had Sedlar and his D scrambling to keep them out - but the Dogs showed a real resolve and kept the Cats out. One of Steeldogs best moments of forward play saw some nice passing work give Lee Haywood the chance to bag number four but he couldnt make it count. Sheffield won 3-1, collecting win number 2 for the weekend and the fourth in a row ahead of next weekend’s visits of Manchester (Friday) and Bracknell (Sunday). Ross ‘The Boss’ Burkinshaw enjoyed tonight’s game so much that he’s coming back next weekend – so if The Boss is back, maybe you should be to?
