Douglas (IOM) 31 Wigan 8 South Lancs and Cheshire Div 1 Saturday October 26th 2013 Played on the Isle of Man in atrocious weather with heavy rain from start to finish, Wigan were unable to adapt and paid the price for a failure to effectively deal with the high ball which Douglas used to great effect in the conditions. This was compounded by poor ball retention and a failure to get any kind of rhythm going through the phases. Douglas opened the scoring with a converted try and added a second try moments later for a 12-0 lead. Wigan fought back with a try by Mike Rigby, but failure to gather yet another high kick allowed Douglas to cross for a third for 19-5 at the interval. Andy Whittle reduced the deficit with a penalty but Douglas went over for a fourth after running back a poor Wigan kick out of defence and added a fifth from a rolling maul, the conversion sealing the match. Orrell continued to keep their opponents in their own half and from a line out Mike Cardwell burst through to put Alex Simpson over for a try. Wilson added the conversion and almost from the restart a good run by winger Gareth Coleman, enabled the Orrell pack to again recycle for Alex Simpson to score his second. Orrell went further ahead, a surge by prop Andy Daley setting up a ruck from which Mike Cardwell crossed for the third, Wilson tagging on the extras. However just before the break Ramsey hit back with a try capitalising on a poor Orrell clearance. A penalty from Wilson extended the lead but having been forced to defend their line, Orrell came back in the closing minutes as Louis Whitfield set up a ruck from where Josh Grant went over for the bonus try. Wilson slotted the conversion before Orrell closed proceeding with a fifth, a kick ahead by Rob Lee gathered by winger Gareth Coleman putting Richard Finney in from 30 metres.
