Down syndrome awareness day #30! I have to be proud of myself - TopicsExpress

Down syndrome awareness day #30! I have to be proud of myself keeping up with this for almost the month, I can do this! Having a son with Down syndrome can take a toll on us. Being told on the day Christopher was born that he may have down syndrome, we really didnt know what we were in store for, didnt know what to expect, which I guess that is why some parents do get tested to get prepared or some other parents abort their fetus because they dont want to have to deal with a child with special needs. But I am glad I didnt know and when Christopher was a baby and till today we treat him like any other child, because why should he be treated differently, we want the same thing out of him like we do with Caitlyn we want him to succeed and flourish and he will, he will do it on his own time when he is ready, but sometimes we do have to push him even when he isnt ready, because we know that he can do it. Being a parent of a special needs isnt all fun and games either, you have to worry, have to worry about if you are doing the right things, like for therapies, is he learning what the therapists want him to learn. Its a struggle at times, trying to understand what he wants. His speech has come along way but he is still difficult to understand. We have to question him a few time what he wants and if we still dont understand we ask him to show us. Have to worry how he will be treated at school, if the kids will treat him nice, if he get bullied will he know what to do.
