Dr. Ahmad wrote this invited discussion with Dr. Rod Rohrich from Dallas on this article in the February 2014 issue of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery describing their approach to addressing the dynamic nasal tip during rhinoplasty. The dynamic nasal tip is secondary to poor nasal tip support and a strong depressor septi nasi muscle connecting the nasal tip to the upper lip. During smiling, this can cause plunging of the nasal tip, a short upper lip, a horizontal upper lip crease and sometimes a gummy smile. During rhinoplasty, we perform maneuvers to address these problems and improve the nasal tip-to-upper lip relationship resulting in a more beautiful and balanced nose during smiling.
