Dr. Ivor Miller fra DePaul University i Chicago har bl.a. beskrevet Gordillo som ’a mediator between two worlds.’ Og han skriver endvidere: ‘Francisco Gordillo Arredondo has assumed responsibility for re-visioning the presence of Africa in Cuba. As a descendant of Kongo founders and Santería practitioners, Gordillo has translated his personal vision of his family inheritance into his paintings. This cultural treasure is at the same time part of the collective mythology and memory of Cuba’s African legacies. During the current tourism boom — when many artists cheapen Cuban mythology with crass superficiality, and others enter the religions in search of mere content to utilize, Gordillo is that rare exception who treats the material as he received it: as sacred inheritance replete with grandeur and dignity. Through his art, we are offered a privileged view into foundational myths of Cuban religions.’
