Dr James Masing is no hero, he just said what has been on the minds of millions of Sabahans and Sarawakians for decades. The anti-federal feelings have been prevalent among the Borneons for many years because of the ill-treatments received from the federal govt, which has been accurately described by Masing. No doubt, the Borneo states have been given a rotten deal under the Malaysia Agreement for many of the safeguards have been dishonored, usurped and nullified. Its an irrefutable fact that 45% of the national budget is funded by petroleum revenue and Petronas draws the bulk of its oils from Sabah and Sarawak. Under the 18/20 Point safeguards, all natural resources, whether on and off shore, rightfully belong to the respective states. Being the poor cousins, why should Sabah and Sarawak be made to contribute towards the development of Peninsula? Why and how the oil rights should be ceded to federal govt is really beyond reason and indeed reprehensible. Though not a hero, Masing should be credited for bringing the Malaysia Agreement into public spotlight even if he may have other political agenda.
