Dr. Majdi Abou Najm is teaching a groundwater hydrology graduate - TopicsExpress

Dr. Majdi Abou Najm is teaching a groundwater hydrology graduate class (CIVE 642) which deals with water flow in the underground. The course covers the physical principles of water flow in porous media and the transport processes associated with pollution. Recognizing the new and serious environmental challenges associated with current uncontrolled wastewater management in refugee camps, he wanted students to have a feel of the size and magnitude of this environmental problem particularly from a groundwater pollution perspective. Dr. Abou Najm took students to Ghata, which is the model AUB is promoting as a model classroom, so students can think of this new evolving challenge in context. The lecture was about the need for proper sanitation practices as well as groundwater implications. Having the lecture in Ghata, instead of the regular classroom, took students a bit of their comfort zone and induced positive impact on the students ability to realize the magnitude and scale of the problem. It was a stimulating experience that made many students interested in volunteering and becoming more active in research and work related to this field.
