Dr. ROBERT SIMPSON, Former Director of National Hurricane Center Dies Dr. Simpson died at his home this morning. He was the longest living former director of the National Hurricane Center. He was born on November 19, 1912 in Corpus Christi, Texas. Dr. Simpson began his meteorological career in Brownsville, Texas as a junior weather observer. He later became a forecaster at the New Orleans weather office. He helped create the Army Air Force weather school in Panama, Florida. He took his first flight into a hurricane onboard an Air Force aircraft based in Panama, Florida. He flew along with the Air Force Hurricane Hunters on piggy back missions. He became the first to take scientific observations from the air inside a hurricane. Later in his career he helped establish the National Severe Storms Project which is the Severe Storms Center today. Dr. Simpson was Director of the National Hurricane Center from 1968 to 1974. During his time there he co-developed the Saffir-Simpson Scale which is used today to categorize hurricanes. The National Tropical Weather Conference presents the Robert and Joanne Simpson Medal for Excellence in Tropical Meteorology at its annual meeting.
