Driver Dies in Vehicle Fire Sunday, June 22, 2014 A male driver is dead after his vehicle caught fire this afternoon in Saint James City. The Lee County Sheriffs Office received a 9-1-1 call in reference to a vehicle fire shortly after 3:00 p.m. When deputies arrived, firefighters with the Pine Island Fire Department were working to extinguish the fully engulfed vehicle. Once the fire was out, a body was located in the drivers seat of the vehicle. There were no other occupants inside the vehicle. An investigation by Lee County sheriffs detectives shows that, for unknown reasons, the victim was driving on one of his steel rims for several miles after his tire shredded. As he drove along Warren Boulevard approaching the intersection of Emerald Avenue, the vehicle burst into flames and the driver was unable to escape. The body has been taken to the Medical Examiners Office for positive identification of the driver and official cause of death.
