Due to a lack of local quality stone, Norman builders plundered Roman Colchester – Camulodunum – to build their keep and chose a site over the ruined Roman Temple of Claudius, incorporating its base into the foundations of the great tower. You can still see these foundations - the Roman Vaults - underneath Colchester Castle on guided tours. You can also see how Roman building materials were reused in the construction of the Castle. The Senator Puk Christoffersen Stewart has recommended a visit to the foundations of the original Roman temple underneath Colchester Castle.
