Due to recent virus affecting dogs in Ohio, the City of Miamisburg - TopicsExpress

Due to recent virus affecting dogs in Ohio, the City of Miamisburg has decided to take a pre-cautionary approach and cancel its Canine Carnival event scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 15 at Riverfront Park. The Ohio Department of Agriculture said its Division of Animal Health has been investigating reports of sick dogs. Symptoms include vomiting, bloody diarrhea, weight loss and lethargy. The illness has killed at least four dogs in Ohio so far, including in Cincinnati and the Akron area. Health officials and veterinarians said dog owners who suspect an illness should get the pet to a veterinarian right away. If it is after hours or your vet isnt available, seek out an emergency vet. "Although we are very disappointed about cancelling the Canine Carnival, we feel it is in the best interest for the health and wellness of the dogs, " Parks and Recreation Director Debbie McLaughlin said. "We do not want to provide an atmosphere that could be unsafe. We intend for the annual Canine Carnival to return in September of 2014." The related 5k-9 Run, Walk and Wag will be held Sunday as planned, but the City strongly recommends that participants participate without their dogs. Participants preferring a refund may contact the Miamisburg Parks and Recreation Department at 866-4532. Pre-registration is still available on-line for the 5k-9 Run, Walk and Wag at speedy-feet or by downloading a registration form at PlayMiamisburg. On-site registration is available Sunday beginning at 9 a.m. at Riverfront Park. Proceeds from this 5K benefit the Humane Society of Greater Dayton.
