Dull Sermons “All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16-17, NLT) Recently, Dr. Howard Hendricks died. Here was a man whose influence has been felt by thousands of seminary students and perhaps hundreds of thousands who sat under his teaching outside the walls of a seminary. He was passionate about teaching people how to study the Bible for themselves and how to pour their lives into younger followers of Jesus. When he taught—whether in the classroom, in personal conversation or in conferences—no listener became drowsy! Howard’s enthusiasm was infectious and inviting. At his memorial service one of his sons described sitting with his father during innumerable church services where not every preacher was of his father’s caliber. Some sermons were just plain dull. One Sunday morning during such a lackluster sermon, the son observed his father avidly writing notes. After filling the margins of the bulletin, he then reached for blank pieces of paper to write even more. That afternoon the son asked Howard how in the world he had been “inspired” to take notes from the preacher’s dry—even lifeless—discourse. “Oh, that’s easy,” replied Howard. “If the preacher isn’t particularly skilled, I just ask God to personally reveal His truth through whatever Bible verses are being taught. I’ve never been disappointed in God’s answers.” Howard Hendrick’s life was literally infused with biblical truth. He never lost an opportunity to dwell within it and was therefore able to become a well of living water for thirsty souls around him. Even the plainest of sermons were transformed as Howard listened to the teaching of the Holy Spirit whispered directly into his own ears. Teach me, Lord, to listen personally for your voice even as others are speaking. Amen Question: What methods do you use to keep alert during sermons that may not be as exciting as you would prefer?
