During World War II, the Japanese cracked one American code after another. So the US military recruited speakers of unusual foreign languages to develop new codes to frustrate the Japanese, but time and again the Japanese figured it out. But Navajo was not a written language and had barely been documented anywhere. The Japanese code-breakers never managed to decipher the Navajo-based code because of the languages subtle and intricate inflections, tones, syntax and grammar. The Navajo code proved so difficult to crack that it remained in use for over 25 years - until 1968. Rest in peace, Corporal Nez. Semper fidelis.
