E*N*I*L*O*L*O*B*O! Anti-Corruption Agencies Not Well Funded — IGP The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, has said that anti-corruption agencies are not doing much in terms of partnerships in their fight against bribery and corruption in the country. Alhaji Abubakar, who stated this at the public presentation of the maiden edition of ‘ICPC Law Report’ held in Abuja yesterday, said that all government agencies involved in the fight against corruption need to work harder to ensure that their efforts yield positive results. “We need a level of collaboration, partnership that works; we are not doing that much but I believe we have always been encouraged by patriotic Nigerians that are willing to contribute and support us in the fight against corruption in this country, and I believe we can do more.” “How do you fight corruption if you are not well paid, you are not well trained, you are not well motivated. Therefore, we are making effort but we need to do more. When operatives go to prosecute cases, you want intelligent investigation and prosecution of cases; but what level of exposure, expertise and experience do these operatives have to that? Learning is a continuous process because your degree does not make you a prosecutor; your degree does not make you an investigator; your degree does not make you a police man - you have to learn. On his part, ICPC chairman Barrister Ekpo Nta said that the need to compile a law report of some selected cases of the ICPC was conceived out of the perceived paradox that the commission’s activities are largely unknown even with the increased awareness through its outreach programmes. “In producing a Law Report of this nature, we have taken a step towards establishing firmly in the minds of our people that cases of corruption have actually led a lot of people to jail for various terms of imprisonment. It brings to fore those elements that constitute corruption that will help lawyers and public to understand.” “The only way we can reward the judiciary is to have good investigations, you cannot take wish-washy investigations and expect to have a conviction based on public opinion, in respect to their presence today, all the ICPC investigators must give an undertaking that they will go extra miles to do the best in terms of what they have to do in this place.” Source: Leadership - See more at: leadership.ng/news/220813/anti-corruption-agencies-not-well-funded-igp#sthash.aYHjLauA.dpuf
