EBOLA: Between ignorance and the fallacy of salt water Like many of you, I too was rudely woken up to the revelation of how bathing with salt water before 8.00am today is the antidote to preventing Ebola infection. From the very outset, it was obvious to me that this was a farce. If nothing it was diametrically at variance with common sense (an honest apology to those who believed it or carried out the instructions out of innocence). Now, lets reason together. What is in common salt? Simply Sodium Chloride. This compound is a natural component of water, and is abundantly found in many of our food/drinks. Infact it is an integral constituent of our body fluid. If it has any preventive measure against ebola, that is more than enough for us. Moreover, even if there is an iota of possibility that this information is true, does that means we would be bathing with salt water every day? We would end up damaging our skin. More still, assuming the solution sterilises your body. Fine, that is with respect to previous contamination. What of subsequent contamination during the course of day? Finally, how can a reasonably thinking person submit that cleansing the body with salt will prevent infection of an airborne disease? Does sterilizing the body equates with sterilizing the atmosphere? Ignorance. Now you know why many scientists in the early days abhored religions. Beyond this obvious display of abject ignorance is something more worrying - the underlying but palpable societal fear. Yes, fear. In 2002, explosions at an ammunitions depot in Ikeja, Lagos killed less than a score, or thereabout. But thousands either died, or remain unaccounted for, for fear of being killed by the explosions. That is what fear can bring. But do you blame a people who are being trailed by fear of deaths or kidnappings everyday? Bombings every now and then. Till now our government is yet to get a grip on that problem; something caused by human being that are visible to even some blind eyes. Yet our existence is being threatened by presently incurable disease caused by a virus that cannot be seen even with an ordinary microscope. What else do we expect? Only God can help us out. May God forgive us our sins in this country.
