An Egyptian court on Sunday adjourned to September 14 the trial of ousted president Mohamed Morsi and 35 others on charges of espionage, a judicial source said. The defense team asked the court to summon President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, who was Morsis defense minister, to testify in the case. They also asked that former Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) chief Mohamed Hussein Tantawi and his deputy Sami Anan testify in the case. Defendants face charges of conspiring with Palestinian resistance group Hamas and Lebanons Hezbollah to carry out terrorist acts inside Egypt. Morsi and his co-defendants emphatically deny the charges, which they insist are politically driven. The court had earlier imposed a media blackout on all trial proceedings. Morsi, Egypts first democratically elected leader, was ousted by the military last summer – after only one year in office – following protests against his presidency. He currently faces multiple criminal charges, including incitement to murder, jailbreak and offending Egypts judiciary. Al-Sisi, widely seen as the architect of Morsis ouster and subsequent imprisonment, became president after winning the May presidential poll.
