EMOTION IS THE FOR THE AFRICAN, REASONING FOR THE GREEK (Leopold sedar senghor) The late Senegalese President, Poet, Pan Africanist, and Philosopher, Leopold Sedar Senghor, could not be father from the truth with the article heading credited to him, if not for making reasoning exclusively Greek. Years later after this statement were made by Senghor; the observation is still valid for most Africa mind, from Nigeria to Namibia, from Congo to C.A.R. The African has refused to allow reason to have the upper hand in discourse and decision making process. Emotion has always beclouded the mind of the African giving no room for rational thought. Looking at Africa today, Emotion has kept us strolling in our quest to develop. The African has refused to allow critical reasoning in issues involving him from science to politics, from religion to our everyday life. Emotion of ethnicity, emotion of religion, emotion in politics and emotion in science has totally crippled Africa. Emotion that allows a man rule over you for more than three decades with no meaningful achievement and you still queue under harsh conditions to vote for him at every election date. Emotions that make you demand that the president of your country and government appointments come from your ethnic and religious group, and not on competency. Emotion that allows you to vigorously and vituperatively defend one who has wronged or underachieved because he has the same ethnic or religious affiliation with you. Emotions that allows you to attach a mystic feeling to thing you can not explain or better refer to it as the work of juju. Emotion makes a mess of you, it takes from you instead of adding, Emotions never allows you to be Reasonable, Emotion makes you poor. Make no mistake, the human mind can never totally do without emotions in decision making, but the control of it at vital times is what matters. Also Emotion is not exclusively African and neither is reasoning solely for the Greek. Reasoning is found in all who do away with Emotions during thoughts but rather rationalize his thoughts. The sooner or later the African do away with emotions in issues affecting his country and continent the better for both. Reading Okey Ndibe ‘culture of low expectations’ I can not, but agree that this phenomenon is caused by emotion of ethnicity and religion. When a northerner or Muslim rules, the north and Muslims magnify the little or rather, unseen achievements, same with the south and Christians under a southern or Christian leader. A leader’s ethnic or religious group are hardliners in defense of his below mediocre achievements. - Obi Trice Emeka
