EU’s Extraordinary Foreign Affairs Council , Gaza : French official statements (Paris, august 14th 2014) Excerpts from the daily press briefing by Vincent Floreani, French Ministry of Foreign Affairs and international Development deputy spokesman (Paris, august 14th 2014) Laurent Fabius’s participation in the EU’s Extraordinary Foreign Affairs Council (Brussels, Aug. 15) Laurent Fabius, minister of foreign affairs and international development, will attend tomorrow’s extraordinary meeting in Brussels of the Foreign Affairs Council, convened at his behest. The following items will be on the agenda: - Iraq: Laurent Fabius will discuss his recent trip to Baghdad and Erbil. Per France’s request, the challenge for the European Union is to increase both humanitarian and military assistance to threatened populations in northern Iraq. - Middle East/Gaza peace process: The ministers will discuss the state of the Cairo negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis. It is important for the EU to provide assistance, as proposed by France, Germany and the United Kingdom, to facilitate the transition from a truce to a lasting ceasefire, for example by reactivating and extending the EUBAM Rafah border monitoring mission. - Ukraine: The minister will discuss the situation on the ground and will stress the need for a political solution. Gaza – death of journalists (Aug. 13) We were deeply saddened to learn of the accident that left five dead yesterday in Gaza, including the Italian journalist Simone Camilli of Associated Press and Ali Abou Afash, the fixer for Agence France Presse. We offer our deep solidarity to all of their loved ones and to their two agencies, Associated Press and Agence France Presse. France reaffirms its support for journalists who, with courage and determination, work each day to keep freedom of information alive. It is committed, notably through the United Nations, to guaranteeing journalists’ security.
