EVERYBODY LOVES TEXAS MOVIES THE TEXAN (1930) I rate this film as 3 stars out of 5 The Texan is a 1930 film Western set in Texas and directed by John Cromwell and starring Gary Cooper and Fay Wray. It was based on the short story The Double-Dyed Deceiver by Texas writer O. Henry, The film is about a daring bandit called the Llano Kid who shoots a young gambler in self-defense and is forced to hide from the law. He is helped by a corrupt lawyer who involves the bandit in a scheme to swindle a Mexican aristocrat whose son turns out to be the young gambler killed by the Llano Kid. There’s a nice O. Henry twist to resolve the story and it’s a good-looking production that lets the characters and their relationships build slowly before the action-packed climax. Filmmaking in the early 30s has not been among my favorite films. This is due to the lack of experience in screenwriting and bad soung recordings left over from the transition from silent films to sound. Also the actors tend to express this more physically due to the needs from the silent era. However; given those complaints, I found the film watchable and Gary Cooper and the Westerns genre have always come through for me.
