EVOLUTION TAKING PLACE IN PROFESSIONAL BOXING REVEALS THE WORLD’S TOP-DOGS Following the development of professional boxing these days is akin to watching a multiplayer game of ping pong played out on a large table. The action bounces from traditional professional boxing organizations or the top four IBF, WWBA, WBC and WBO. Several more players have gathered speed as alphabetical boxing organizations so have entered the fray. But, the big four remains entrenched deeply in the development of the sport itself. There is much differences and it is quite dizzying. Obviously there are many human dimensions and much suffering attendant to these developments. But something else interesting seems to be happening in two simultaneous trends. One trend is the revolutionary nature of boxing, where amateur boxing seem want to overlap its mandate of influence by moving away from being the sport of Olympics that unify countries and building bridges to competing with the professional boxing organizations. Such changes and ambitions seem to meet oppositions in every corner of the world as many sees this as some kind of monopoly game. AIBA, the organization that manages amateur boxing seem to have shut its ears to the opposition expressed so far! The leading brothers of professional boxing that are IBF, WBA, WBC appears to be trying to reconstitute their sphere of influence to counter the growing ambition of AIBA if any and of course to put up mechanism that would guarantee the safety mode of pro boxing. The big guns from these three bodies have already met in Mexico once and the following meeting will soon be underway! Whether motivated by ethno nationalism or glorious beliefs, such revanchist or irredentist aims are welcome in all quarters. We need order in professional boxing and the leading three would surely provide leadership sooner rather than later. However, this revolutionary trend in boxing, if not properly checked and managed, could create confusion and increasingly antagonistic and potentially belligerent rearrangements of how boxing is governed and managed by the world power dynamics.
