Each day that House Republican leadership does not move immigration reform forward, the party lets itself be defined by the likes of Congressman Steve King (R-IA), who believes most DREAMers are drug-runners with ‘calves the size of cantaloupes’ and who recently called the Deferred Action program “Deferred Action for Criminal Aliens.” The only votes on immigration that the Republican Party House leadership has allowed have been votes to try to get rid of Deferred Action. It is no wonder that in a recent survey of young people throughout the nation, the party found that Latinos think Republicans couldn’t care less about them. One concrete and powerful step that the party can take to begin to transform their anti-Latino image is to distance themselves from Rep Kings anti-immigrant, racist rhetoric and bring bi-partisan immigration reform legislation up for a vote.
