Each religion has a firm base of unique traditions and beliefs, something that has been followed and appreciated for centuries together. These deep rooted practices essentially have become its pillar for sustenance across young and old. One such religion is Islam, being in practice since 600 AD and proposes five essential acts to be followed by Muslims, during his/her course of life. Shahada The most important pillar of Islam and the true testimony of Islamic faith Shahada states that there is no God, except God and Muhammad is God’s messenger. This actually translates to the fact that none has the right to be worshipped other than God, and that God has no aide. This aspect has the following verse : La ilaha illa Allah, Muhammadur rasoolu Allah. Five Pillars of Islam Salat Islam propagates prayers to be offered 5 times a day from dawn to night by a pious Muslim. The prayers are always offered facing Kabba in Mecca. Zakat Islam believes in maintaining equality, and has outlaid its followers to practice charity and share with needy. Tough Zakat means purification, it lays emphasis on the fact that sharing wealth with the needy brings about balance and purification of one’s soul, since all things belong to Allah and individuals are mere trustees to this spectacle. Zakat can either be monetary or can be compensated by good deeds and behaviour. Sawn Sawm denotes fasting. Islam preaches that fasting in the holy month of Ramzan is mandatory for all Muslims (men and women) and should be practiced diligently. This month is to bring oneself closer to God, and seek forgiveness for any misdeeds. All Muslims abide by this throughout their life. Few groups for people may be excluded from the mandatory fasting that includes children, diseased individuals or pregnant or menstruating women. Hajj Any god fearing Muslim should visit Hajj, at least once in his lifetime. This holy pilgrimage is regarded as the a crucial pillar in Islam and is highly honoured - See more at: theeid/five-pillars-of-islam.html#sthash.00lZ6Fxh.dpuf
