Early Zionists were secular Jews. Many were atheists, mostly from Europe, who liked the idea of a Jewish state where they could not be persecuted. Arab or Palestinian Jews had always tried to be part of their Arab communities as a whole. the European settlers who arrived were different. This documentary explains how Zionism emerged from the late 19th century movements towards nationalism which took hold across the world. It used ancient biblical texts to legitimise the colonisation of Palestine from the 1890s on. This became outright terrorism in 1947 and it continued in 1967.
