Early this week, the Provost at Montclair State University (New Jersey) announced that MSU will no longer require the SAT or ACT for admission. Temple University has also made this change. It is the University’s view that standardized tests can have the undesirable effect of disadvantaging capable, striving students from lower socio-economic backgrounds, many of whom do not have the benefit of costly preparation courses. Focusing on an individual student’s actual accomplishments in high school over a period of years, no matter which community she or he grew up in or which high school they attended, will yield a highly diverse freshmen class characterized by determination, ambition, and the demonstrated willingness to make the effort necessary to succeed in Montclair State’s academically rigorous environment.
