**East Peak Fire Update** Slow, cautious progress made on the East Peak Wildfire Cooler evening conditions kept fire activity minimal following a successful burnout operation that took place yesterday. A contingent of engines will be in place today to ensure safety of structures from hotspots within the fire perimeter. Operations Section Chief, Travis Lipp, emphasized the importance of this task when he told crews to “check, recheck and check again when looking for hot spots around structures.” “Firefighters did an excellent job yesterday,” praised Lipp, “and we will continue to use them to construct handline along the western perimeter of the fire today.” This will extend the containment line created by the burnout operation. This is a heavily timbered area where highly qualified crews will carefully work over the next several days. “Red flag” conditions are forecasted for very hot, dry and windy conditions, keying firefighters into critical fire weather today. The fire, burning ten miles southwest of Walsenburg is 15 percent contained and 12,966 acres. Firefighters are appreciative of the community support that has been expressed.
