Ebonyi Assembly boils, as thugs attack Deputy Speaker, others From Jeff Amechi Agbodo, Abakalik Suspected thugs yesterday attacked the Deputy Speaker of Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Hon. Blaise Orji, the leader of the House, Mr. Sam Nwali and other 10 members of the House at the premises of Assembly. The thugs numbering over 50 attacked some members who came for a sitting, blocking them from gaining entrance into the chambers of the House. It was gathered the Speaker of the House, Mr. Chukwuma Nwazunku and 9 other members had already entered the chambers and locked all the doors leading to the chambers when 12 other members including the deputy speaker came in a motorcade and was cleared by the police at the gate to enter into the premises before the thugs inside the premises attacked them injuring some members. The situation threw the House into confusion as some of the members ran for their safety. The leader of the House was disposed of his valuables before he jumped out from the fence with bruises all over him, while his legislative aide was beaten up mercilessly. The crisis attracted the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Maigari Dikko who came with armed policemen and arrested over 50 of the thugs who at the time of filling this report were being interrogated and their statement taken. The member representing Afikpo South West Barr. Eni Uduma Chima in an interview said they were not informed of the sitting, but when they heard about it they decided to come for the sitting and was attacked by thugs at the Assembly complex while they were trying to gain entrance into the chambers. The deputy speaker expressed surprises that policemen were there when they were being attacked by the suspected thugs, saying that it was a police officer who prevented them from entering the House chambers and called on Inspector General of Police to investigate the matter. But the Speaker denied the attack on the deputy speaker and the other members. He said that they were the ones who attacked the House by throwing stones into the chambers and smashing the window glasses when the House was in session, saying that they nobody stopped them from gaining entrance into the chambers. The State Police Commissioner denied the allegation that the police was compromised, saying that he was not there when the crisis started, but when he was informed he mobilized his men to the place.
