Ed Reich is now 99 years old, still living where he lived with my mother for many decades, still with the humor and wisdom and occasional temper I remember from my childhood, but sweeter than he was then and more appreciative. His memory is weaker; I have to gently remind him of some of the stories he loved to tell and of some of the friends who he relished seeing when they were alive. But he still remembers whats important to him. He told me recently of when he was a boy in New York, watching the veterans march. Among them were veterans of the Civil War. But his family remains the most important thing to him, and he remembers everything keenly. When I told him this morning that I was coming to visit him this week, he said of course, and youll be here Wednesday at 2 pm, and Im so looking forward to it. Im looking forward to it even more. Im poignantly aware that my visits to him are numbered. They are great gifts to me, which I will always treasure.
