Edward Burkhardt logic: The Mégantic railway train would not have moved from its secured position if all the requisite handbrakes [say -- every 7 th on or about 11 in total] had been tightened by Mr. Harding. The train did move -- therefore Mr. Harding did not tighten the requisite number of brakes, claims Burkhardt... I think the initial assumption is completely false, and Burkhardt knows it. My guess is that the train did move WITH THE MANUAL BRAKES TIGHTENED.
