Egypts John Stewart: Mixed Record After the Military Coup Weve noted here several times that few of the liberals who objected to undemocratic elements of Mohamed Morsis presidency have spoken out against the autocracy and violence of the military regime that deposed him. One exception appeared to be Dr. Bassem Youssef, a commedian who was hailed as the Egyptian John Stewart for his stinging critiques of Morsi and was arrested (and later acquitted) of insulting the president. Youssefs TV show recently returned for the new season, and he was charged with insulting the interim president, making him seem like a staunch defender of democracy, regardless of who is violating its principles. Yet this column in the Huffington Post suggests that since the military coup, Youssefs record in defense of liberty is far from perfect. huffingtonpost/patrick-galey/bassem-youssef-and-the-li_b_4176877.html
