The political weather in Indian state of Jammu & Kashmir (J&K is heading for change with the upcoming Assembly elections in the state starting from November 25. Against the backdrop of the alleged mismanagement of the recent devastation caused by floods in the state by the Omar Abdullah government, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is expected to deal well in the upcoming Assembly elections in J&K. The party had won three out of the six Lok Sabha seats in the 2014 General Elections. If the Parliamentary polls are any indication, there is a possibility that the November Assembly polls may result in the PDP forming the government with support from the BJP which is also a strong contender in this election. In such a situation, Mehbooba Mufti may become the next Chief Minister of J&K. Early Life and Political Career Born on May 22 in the year 1959, Mehbooba is currently the president of PDP. Daughter of the former Union Home Minister and former Chief Minister of J&K, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, Mehbooba Mufti is currently Member of Parliament (MP) from the Anantnag constituency of J&K. A law graduate from the University of Kashmir, Mehbooba is amongst one of the most recognised Indian leaders belonging to Jammu & Kashmir. In the elections held in 2014, she won the Anantnag-Pulwama seat for the next five years term. She defeated National Conference’s Mirza Mehboob Beg with a margin of 44,735 votes. She got 1,42,237 and Beg 97,502 votes. Earlier in 2002, she had won Pehlgam seat in the Assembly elections. Her sister Rubaiya Sayeed as well as her family grabbed the headlines, though not for the right reasons, in 1989 when Rubaiya was kidnapped by a terrorist organisation and later released in the exchange of three dreaded terrorists in Kandahar, Afghanistan. The terrorist had successfully negotiated this deal as they had abducted an Indian Airlines flight IC 814 along with its passengers and made that to land at the Kandahar Airport. As a popular political leader, Mehbooba Mufti came into limelight in the year 1996 winning Bijbehara assembly seat of J&K on a ticket form the Congress Party. That year, she was also chosen leader of the opposition in the Assembly for the five-year term with the Farooq Abdullah government ruling the state. Growing Public Support for Mehbooba Mufti According to political pundits, currently, there is a strong wave in the PDP’s favour in J&K in the wake of people’s aspirations of bringing about a change in the government in the state. Recently, Mehbooba had whole-heartedly welcomed Prime Minister Modi’s decision to celebrate the festival of Diwali with the flood affected people in the state. She has continuously criticised the mismanagement of the situation erupted after the floods hit the state, on the part of the ruling Omar Abdullah government. She was the one of the first leaders in J&K who tried to draw attention of the Prime Minister with a memorandum, towards the alleged mishandling of the post-flood situation in the state. She demanded Rs 44000 crore from the Centre for the relief and rehabilitation measures. Unemployment, favouritism and rampant corruption with regard to the Omar Abdullah government are amongst the most important issues raised her party in the current elections in the state and on almost all these pro-people issues she seems to be drawing considerable support from the people in J&K.
