Elections before reaching a peaceful solution to the conflict in - TopicsExpress

Elections before reaching a peaceful solution to the conflict in Afghanistan will result into continuation of conflict and an illegitimate government. Neither security nor the current corrupt government would allow an inclusive, free and fair elections to take place. The government formed as a result of such elections would not be seen by majority of Afghans anything more than continuation of the Western project in Afghanistan. Therefore, it is a must that all stakeholders work honestly for a peaceful solution to the conflict in Afghanistan. They must include the following steps: (1) immediate ceasefire so peace talks can start, (2) interim government acceptable to all sides, (3) withdrawal of NATO forces simultaneously replaced by UN Peace keeping forces from Islamic countries (excluding our neighbors) so the UNPKO would keep peace (ceasefire) and allow/facilitate peace talks to reach a solution, and (4) free and fair elections. Not taking the first three steps before elections would mean that the government wants to continue with Mafia rule and the international community is no longer interested to bring peace to Afghanistan. This would make the "decade of transformation" as meaningless and empty as the "decade of transition." I appeal to all civil society and political forces committed to peace and prosperity in Afghanistan to take this proposal seriously and create a united force behind it so we can reach a peaceful solution to the conflict we have been suffering from for decades.
