Elgeyo Marakwet, Kenya: Police in Elgeyo Marakwet have impounded a lorry ferrying sandalwood valued at Sh9 million and arrested four suspects. The sandalwood is believed to have originated from the semi-arid area of Kerio Valley and the lorry was on its way to the black market before it was intercepted by Administration Police (AP) officers at Biretwo Trading Center along the Iten- Kabarnet highway. Chepsigot Assistant Chief Peter Kiptoo said they were alerted by members of the public who found the suspects loading the endangered tree species into a lorry and arrested them as they attempted to flee. We rushed to the scene with the APs and found the suspects on their way and arrested them but one suspect managed to escape, noted the administrator. He revealed that two of the suspects were from Elgeyo Marakwet County while the others were from the neighbouring county adding they attempted to bribe them with Sh300,000. This is a very lucrative business and we suspect financially well off individuals must be involved because the amount of bribe they wanted to offer us was huge, he claimed.
