Elgin County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is currently investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision in the west bound lanes of Highway 401 at Furnival Road, West Elgin. The collision occurred at approximately 4pm this date January 22nd, 2015. A west bound tractor trailer carrying a load of car parts traveled into the centre media and then collided with one of the concrete pillars of the Furnival Road overpass bridge. The tractor trailer was completely destroyed in the collision. Diesel fuel from the tractor trailers ruptured fuels tanks spilled onto both the west bound and east bound lanes of highway 401. The bridge pillar, which had been struck, appeared to have only minor damage and will be examined more closely once the vehicle is removed from the scene. The driver of the tractor trailer, a 49 year old Municipality of Bayham man was pronounced dead at the scene. Release of his name is pending notification of next of kin. OPP Technical Traffic Collision investigators are currently on scene assisting with the investigation. Police are continuing to investigate to determine a cause for the collsion. Traffic is currently being re-routed of highway 401 via the Emergency Detour Routes (EDR). West bound highway 401 traffic is being diverted off at Graham Road. East bound traffic is being diverted off at Orford Road. It is anticipated that the highway will remain closed for the next several hours to facilitate the investigation and clean up.
