Elizabeth Kolbert on Keystone XL and our Keystone Principle: To avoid truly catastrophic climate change, the world needs to avoid new, long-term capital investments that are going to lock in dangerous levels of carbon emissions. A project that clearly fails this test is Keystone itself; the pipeline, KC Golden notes, is both a conspicuous example of this kind of investment and a powerful symbol for the whole damned category. Which is why delaying Keystone is better than at least one of the obvious alternatives.
