Empire by Orson Scott Card. Read it now. I loath politics and I really dont consider myself one side of the fence or the other - my opinions are my own and I do not consider my truths law for others, but this book is full of hmm. You cant shove human nature in a box and expect it to survive. This is politics. The art of (often superficial) fair. Is it even possible to successfully apply such a rigid, inorganic concept as government to such an organic, diverse entity as human nature. I dont think so. Eventually one will die. ................................................... When do you first set foot on the ladder to greatness? Or on the slippery slope of treason? Do you know it at the time? Or do you discover it only looking back? “All the common people want is to be left alone. All the ordinary soldier wants is to collect his pay and not get killed. Thats why the great forces of history can be manipulated by astonishingly small groups of determined people.” “Personal affection is a luxury you can have only after all your enemies are eliminated. Until then, everyone you love is a hostage, sapping your courage and corrupting your judgment.” We dont want individual liberty because we dont want individual responsibility. We want somebody else to take care of us. If we had a dictator who did a better job of it than our present system, then as long as he pretended to respect Congress, wed lick his hands like dogs..Im not advocating anything, Im only observing. Were historians, not politicians. We have to look at how polities actually function, not how we wish to delude ourselves into thinking they ought to function. Our short-term politics trump long-term national interests every time -Orson Scott Card, Empire
