Employees, IFPTE Local 12 is keeping a watchful eye on what is happening with regard to the government shutdown and the looming debt ceiling limit that is fast approaching. Our legislative director at the International office, Matt Biggs, has been front and center on the Hill visiting congressional offices with various locals to impress upon the congressmen and senators the need to get the budget issues resolved, and presenting the concerns of the thousands of workers represented by IFPTE. Unfortunately he is not optimistic that this crisis will be resolved soon. With that in mind, we all should carefully consider the financial impact the possibility of another shutdown of the government may have on our personal budgets and ultimately our families. It may be time to tighten those purse strings and take all of the precautions necessary to provide the best possible financial stability for our families so that we can weather this storm that seems to be headed our way. Things like bumping up our savings accounts if possible; exploring a TSP loan for additional revenue should a budget shortfall threaten our ability to meet household expenses; or limiting the spending of any of our discretionary budget if we even have one. The impact of a government shutdown has been felt by some of us for the past week, but there is a possibility that another, much more inclusive shutdown could occur and we must do everything we can to prepare for it. We at Local 12 will continue to be engaged and pass on information as it becomes available. We need to stick together and support each other in these trying times. IN SOLIDARITY, Bob Steinmetz President, IFPTE Local 12
