English News VCE English As we wind down into the term holidays, it’s been very pleasing to note the tremendous efforts of many of our senior students as they work on developing their skills across a range of text related tasks. The Year 11 students have found language analysis particularly challenging, studying the more sophisticated persuasive devices in numerous media texts but have certainly impressed their English teachers with their rapid uptake of the necessary language skills. Year 12 students will be relieved to have completed most of the coursework this week and parents are reminded to encourage their child to attend the English Revision Lectures from 9:00am-1:00pm on Wednesday, 2nd October held at KSC. The lectures will provide students the opportunity to consolidate their under-standing of the content in preparation for the October exam. iddle School-Booklist 2014 As stated in previous newsletters, from 2014 the English Domain will be adding a novel onto the booklist for Years 7-10. We recog-nise this adds a further cost but remind parents that continued budgetary constraints have now impacted on our long-standing ability to provide all class-studied texts. Details of text selections and costs will be provided in forthcoming newsletters. Parents can be reassured that every effort is made to select texts which are both engaging and accessible to our students and can be passed down/ sold to others. Student Writing In keeping with our intention of promoting student’s writing through this newsletter, the following piece – written by a Year 10 student who has asked not to be identified- illustrates a particularly striking use of language and, we believe, captures the close rela-tionship the writer shares with her chosen subject in a way that is both profound yet simply stated. Students were asked to explore a relationship they had with someone they admired or were close to, capturing those features of the subject’s personality and character. We welcome any feedback and again ask parents to encourage their child’s reading and writing by offering to read their work/class novel. Dakota Her smile, bright and wide, with little gap- spaced teeth are accom-panied with sweet dimples either side that blow cheeky raspberries every now and then. Crazy blonde curls twist in all directions that bounce around from side to side when playing chasey. She releases some comical remarks that always end in laughter. Her love for sweets and indulging rewards is usually fulfilled with a ‘Kinder Surprise’. With lusciously long eyelashes that flicker with wonder and hazel eyes that add to her enchantment. The rain that night was delicately pattering on our rooftop leaving tiny echoes on the tin. As she lay snuggled to my side in bed under my lantern lights, her soft silk hair resting gently on my neck, her eyelids begin fluttering from a wondrous dream she must be imag-ining. The unexpected crack of thunder rumbles through the ground causing her innocent body to jolt with fear. Suddenly, her drowsy eyes begin to peer open at me. I sigh and grin at her tired face which she then returns with one of her own weary, yet warm, smiles. I whisper softly for her to go back to sleep, in which she replies, “Okay, I love you”. Her little eyelids slowly start to close and her arms reaches over my body, her hands ice cold on my skin, my heart warm with adoration. Last week, I shut the door behind me as I head off on my way to the school bus, Dakota at our front window with tears falling from her soft pink cheeks, crying for me to come back. Heartbreak as I continue down the timeworn brick pathway, a child’s shattered cry in the background. I turn to face those crushed hazel eyes but be-fore I can wave goodbye, she brings composure to her tears and wipes the frost from the ice-fogged window. “You forgot my hug and kiss…” she says, her eyes glistening with sorrow. So much adoration and lively spirit in such a petite body. For a girl who has only been in the world for 3 years, she surely has made life ex-traordinary in her own cheeky way. My sister.
