Enrico Caruso sings Ave Maria - Recorded March 20, 1913 Ave Maria- Composed by Percival Benedict Kahn. Enrico Caruso, tenor. Mischa Elman, violin. Recorded March 20, 1913 in New York City. This record is a concert hall record. It is a large 12 long play 78 RPM and is single sided. It sold in 1913 for $4. In 1913 four Dollars would have the equivalent value in todays Dollar of $242! The Record is played on my 1917 * Meteor Metro Solid Mahogany Phonograph. In 1913 the Dollar was backed in gold, $20 = One Ounce of Gold. To see what a Dollar should be worth one only needs to see what an Ounce of Gold is and divide by 20. As of January 6, 2015 a 1913 gold-backed Dollar would have the buying power of $60.55! *[Meteor Metro made some if the first motorized hearses and as a promotional item to be offered with the hearses for the new business of funeral parlors made high quality hand carved phonographs for the use and display in funeral parlors. Only a few of the phonographs were sold to the general market. My model was a funeral parlor model. Few of these phonographs have survived.]
