Enroll now for Spring FIN 798-304 Managed Futures taught by Arditti Center Board member Mark Shore! Course meets on Thursdays, from 5:45 to 9:00 pm. Course Description This course is designed from a practitioner’s perspective to give students exposure to the managed futures industry within alternative investments by discussing various aspects and terminology of this asset class. It falls into the alternative investment space of global macro and liquid alpha or liquid alternatives. As the platform for discussion is focused on managed futures, the tools and concepts of this course will find relevance to other investments and offer a stronger foundation in asset allocation. Managed Futures includes the trading of commodities, financial futures and foreign exchange and is one of the fastest growing asset classes and yet the investment management community is just beginning to understand it. Jobs in the investment industry are growing for practitioners who understand this part of investment management. Portions of the course will introduce various metrics used for evaluating trading models/ portfolios and risk management. The course includes a hands-on application of due diligence of managers and how to choose the managers. The course will also discuss some trading strategies utilized and current topics/ macro economics as they relate to the lessons of the course. The students will learn to express their positive or negative views of fund managers and trading models to senior management, an investment committee or investors, thus utilizing the concepts of asset allocation and due diligence. We will have a few well-known industry practitioners as guest speakers. The grading is derived from heavy emphasis on class participation/ discussion, short papers, team presentations students deliver to the class and an individual final paper due at the end of the course. Students should have a basic understanding of statistics and of futures contracts. The structure of the course is to relate to the student’s career. Mr. Shore has more than 25 years of investment, research and futures experience. He is the Founder and Chief Research Officer of Shore Capital Management LLC that consults in alternative investments regarding due diligence, research, educational workshops and business development. Mr. Shore is an Adjunct Professor at DePaul Universitys Kellstadt Graduate School of Business. He is also a Board Member of the Arditti Center for Risk Management at DePaul University. He is a Contributing Writer for Reuters Hedgeworld, Eurex Exchange, the CBOEs futures exchange (CFE) and Micro-Cap Review. Mr Shore is an Adjunct at the New York Institute of Finance. Adding to Mr. Shores passion for the capital markets research and writing, he writes a Yahoo finance column and a NY and a Chicago economics/ finance column for Examiner, where he writes market commentary and educational research and events related to the investment industry. Mr. Shore is a frequent speaker at alternative investment events including events hosted by Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, Institutional Investor, International Association of Financial Engineers (IAFE), the University of Chicago, DePaul University, Tulane University, the Illinois Economics Association, Illinois Institute of Technology, HedgeWorld and the New York Institute of Finance. In December 2013, Mr. Shore began hosting the Sunday night internet alternative investment show Skewing Your Diversification on BTFD.TV Prior to founding Shore Capital, Mr. Shore was Head of Risk for Octane Research Inc in NYC from 2007 to 2008, where he was responsible for quantitative risk management analysis and due diligence of Fund of Funds. He chaired the Risk Management Committee and was a voting member of the Investment Committee. Prior to joining Octane, he was at VK Capital Inc from 1997 to 2006, a wholly owned Commodity Trading Advisor subsidiary of Morgan Stanley. As Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Shore provided research and risk management expertise on portfolio issues, product development and business strategy. Before becoming Chief Operating Officer, he was a Senior Research Analyst at VK Capital where he developed systematic trading models and a due diligence platform to test trading strategies. Mr. Shore graduated from DePaul University with a degree in Finance. He received his MBA from the University of Chicago with concentrations in Finance, Behavioral Science and Econometrics. Mr. Shore is an avid long distance cyclist and a strong believer in giving back to the community. Since 2004 he has participated in the Livestrong (Lance Armstrong Foundation) rides. August 29, 2010 Mr. Shore co-produced a fund raising concert Tutor/Mentor Jam. He is also an actor and extra in numerous Chicago-based films and television shows including Man of Steel, Boss, Chicago Fire, Mob Doctor, and most recently Chicago P.D..
