Environmental News 15.1.15 Part VI: Autobahn is going green – Yeah, I know it sounds like an Oxymoron but Hamburg is heralding change The 8 000 mile long Autobahn in Germany is getting a green upgrade - at least in Hamburg - where their Ministry of Urban Development is planning to build three new public parks on top of it by 2022. The road network runs through Hamburg’s city centre, dividing the east and west with noisy, dirty traffic and this plan will see sections of the highway line topped with green roofs that welcome locals to enjoy the new lush landscapes. This is all part of a forthcoming green network, which will also create more parks, community gardens and trails in the city and will eventually end up making the city car free by 2030. The redesign will cover 2 miles of the Autobahn, giving 60 acres of new green space back to the people of Hamburg and once developed, the new parks will also foster population growth by creating new quiet areas for the some 2 000 homes to be built there. inhabitat/hamburg-plans-to-build-public-green-spaces-atop-noisy-autobahn/
