Essential No. 2 - The critical importance of maintaining and correcting the curves of your spine Q. Why do disc herniations happen? A. Disc injuries can occur from trauma, lifting injuries, and accumulative mircro-traumas which eventually give way. A 2001, study shed some light on the correlation between proper spinal alignment and the susceptibility to disc herniations. They looked at two groups. One group had lost the cervical curve in the neck and the other group had a proper lordotic curve in the neck. What they found was that during compressive loading, straight spines tended to fail through the anterior motor unit, meaning the disc and vertebral bodies. The spines with a lordotic configuration supported more of the weight on the posterior joints thereby sparing the discs and vertebral bodies. Therefore, in a spine with lordotic curves, it is nearly impossible to get discs to fail with compressive loading.
